Weekend Coffee Date: Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop

Sugar Mama’s certainly isn’t a new bakery in Austin. They’ve been making some of the best sweets in this city for 10 years. But I’m re-inpsired to post about them here today as part of my Weekend Coffee Date series because the shop is just so dang cute and it’s a great place to meet a friend for a date!

Olivia, owner of Sugar Mama’s, won first place in Food Network’s Cupcake Wars in 2013. She’s now the owner of TWO Sugar Mama’s locations in Austin: south and east. I asked her if she feels like she’s living the dream, and she responded rather nonchalantly… “I’ve been doing it for 10 years, so it’s just what I do!”

I mean…she’s just a master cupcake-baker.

And a mom of two kids.

And owner of an award-winning bakery that has found success in one of the most competitive food cities in the country.

NBD.

Sugar Mama’s menu changes with the day, so if you’re looking for a certain cupcake, check out their online menu.

A few of my favorites:

The Marilyn Monroe: The original blond bombshell – buttery vanilla cupcake topped with luscious Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla buttercream. Happy birthday, Mr. President!

The Great Pumpkin: Spiced pumpkin cake studded with mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, topped with our tangy cream cheese frosting!

Harlow’s Honey Baklava: One of our Cupcake Wars awards winners! Buttermilk honey cake made with Round Rock honey, baklava filling, cinnamon buttercream and topped with a filo puff.

Jack’s Lemon: Moist lemon cupcake topped with tangy lemon buttercream and a sour lemon candy. Pucker up, buttercup!

Southern Belle: Ravishing red velvet cupcake topped with our irresistible vanilla cream cheese frosting.

Sugar Mama’s makes everything from scratch. Every. Single. Thing. Lots of bakeries cut corners by using pre-made fillings, but the team at Sugar Mama’s starts super early every morning to make sure everything is perfectly prepared, 100% from scratch.

This is bakery, not just a cupcake shop. You’ll find lots of yummy cupcakes here, but they’ve also got custom made cakes, pie, macarons, brownies, and more! Nate got my 27th birthday cake here, and it had edible glitter on it! So cute.

Both locations are absolutely darling. I don’t have kids, but if I ever have a daughter, she’s having a birthday party here. 😉

It’s the perfect little spot for meeting up with a girlfriend and chatting over a cup of coffee and a plate of cupcakes!

Ooh, also worth noting: it’s closed on Mondays! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve parked in the parking lot and found the door locked, just to realize my cupcake dreams for the day had been squashed! CLOSED ON MONDAY. Buy your cupcakes any other day of the week, ha!
