Polvos Mexican Restaurant: An Austin Classic

My family and friends ask this question all the time: “I’m visiting Austin and want a Mexican restaurant with good margaritas, chips and queso, and an outdoor patio. Where should I go? Answer: Polvos!

They’ve been a staple in the 78704 zip code for years and years. This south Austin restaurant has a self-serve fresh salsa bar inside, famous enchiladas and fajitas, and giant burritos for those who are brave enough to take one on..

It’s won all sorts of restaurant poll awards, and Eater Austin is regularly listing it as one of their favorites for queso, margs, tortilla soup, and just all-around one of the best restaurants in Austin. It’s an Austin classic that everyone should try!

The tortilla soup is my favorite! Nate says he wishes it was spicier (between the two of us, he’s the one who also adds hot sauce or extra heat to his food), but I love the hearty broth, big chunks of chicken, and heavy speckles of cilantro sprinkled on top.

There’s nothing like an outdoor patio for Sunday lunch. Bright sunshine, clinking glasses, big plates of warm food, hearty laughs and stories and meaningful discussions with friends….I love it all.

This is just one of the many great Mexican patio restaurants in Austin…I’ll share lots more soon!
