My New Favorite Book Genre

It’s been a little over two years since I made a conscious effort to start reading. That’s not all that long, but still, I can’t believe it took me this long to figure out the genre of books that I was destined to love. I’ve fallen more and more in love with food, but whenever I tried to read a cookbook, I just zoned out! Some people love reading cookbooks, but it’s not my thing. But I love food, and as I was reviewing some books I’ve enjoyed recently, it clicked:

I can’t get enough of food writing.

I’m obsessed with it! This shouldn’t surprise me, seeing as it’s a combination of two of my favorite things in the world: reading + eating. After realizing this, I looked back through some of the books I’ve read in the past year or so and realized that I’ve read a handful of them…and loved each one!

5 Foodie Books That I Love

____________

Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist

Who else has read this one? It was really popular when it came out back in 2013. I didn’t end up reading it until last year, but even so, it was one of my favorite reads of the year (out of 100 books!). Her writing makes me want to gather up my close friends and family, cook food with them, and share time together. She is the coziest writer!

My Kitchen Year by Ruth Reichl

Currently reading (and loving!) this one! I finished Reichl’s Garlic and Sapphires last month in my March reads, and since then I’ve gotten three more of her books! My Kitchen Year is part memoir/part recipe book. After reading some of Reichl’s recipes, I sorta understand now how someone could enjoy reading a cookbook cover-to-cover…

My Life in France by Julia Child

Every food lover (and fan of the movie Julie and Julia) needs to read Julia Child’s memoir! Not only is her name a staple in the world of food writing, but she is also adorable. I love her personality and writing style! I also am obsessed with the fact that she discovered her love for cooking so late in life.

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

I love Tony’s snark, both in his TV shows like The Layover and in his writing. This was the book that made me realize that I definitely, for sure, 100% never want to be a chef. Not my lifestyle. But it’s amusing to read about!

The Sweet Life in Paris by David Lebovitz

This book, written by the famous blogger, chef, and writer David Lebovitz, will make you want to eat, eat, eat! I made the mistake of listening to this one as an audiobook. I always found myself listening to it while I was driving home from gigs around 11:00 at night on an empty stomach, cursing myself for choosing such a tasty book. But I couldn’t stop reading it!

___________

I currently have 4 more food books lined up on my kindle: 3 memoirs and 1 novel. Any food books you’ve read recently that I should add to the list? I’m all ears!

Enjoy your Wednesday, friends!

I LOVE Bread & Wine! I gave it out as a Christmas gift to several ladies in my family last year. I need to read it again so that I can get excited about cooking again. Daniel and I have been in a cooking rut lately.

I don’t think I could handle food books. I haven’t watched the Food Network since…. 2005? It always resulted in me stuffing my face with something lol. I have no self control.
