Dinner at Uchi in Austin

Each year on the anniversary of our first date, Nate and I pick a fun restaurant in Austin to try together. Year one was French food at Lenoir, year two was Qui, Paul Qui’s east Austin restaurant (which has now been closed and reopened as a new concept: Kuneho), and for our third anniversary we picked Uchi!

James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole’s sushi restaurant has also expanded to locations in Dallas and Houston (with a 4th location in Denver set to open in the near future). There’s also the “little sister” restaurant concept, Uchiko in Austin, but it all started with Uchi on S. Lamar in 2003.

Nate and I were thrilled to finally get to try to this restaurant. Eating at Uchi is an experience, and because we knew we probably wouldn’t be able to be back in a while, we went all out with the ten course chef’s tasting. Oh my word…it was so much fun! We chose to sit at the sushi bar instead of a table. If you’re given the option, choose the sushi bar! We essentially had our own sushi chef in front of us the entire meal, and I was mesmerized by his impressive knife skills and friendly wit. Michael was our chef, and he was so kind to answer all of my questions about sushi (I’m kind of the queen of asking questions at restaurants…but I know it gets annoying sometimes, haha!).

The ten course chef’s tasting was also a fun way to go because, while Nate and I both appreciate sushi, neither one of us knows a lot about it and we wouldn’t have been able to make informed decisions when choosing our items off the menu. With the chef’s tasting, all of the decisions were made for us, and we got to choose our sake and indulge in course after course. Here are pictures of the tastings we enjoyed!

Even though it was a long meal with a lot of courses, I found myself wishing it wouldn’t end! I can’t wait to go back for another special occasion sometime. It was, by far, one of my very favoring dining experiences in Austin.

On the topic of dating, specifically long-term dating, I find that the longer we’re together as a couple, the more

A) Alike we are, and

B) Weird we become

So, the other day, we were cooking dinner together, just having a normal conversation, and I turned to Nate and said, “if anyone was trying to interpret our conversation, it wouldn’t make sense.” Because as we each get to know one another better and better and spend heaps of time together, it seems that we start talking in an abbreviated language with inside jokes thrown in with every-other sentence. Do you know what I’m talking about? Haha. I think it’s the same way with any good friendship, romantic or not…you just start talking in your own language!
