6 Free Workouts in Austin

Recently I’ve been a big fan of fitness classes. My fiance gifted me a 20-class pass to Yoga Yoga, and I’ve noticed some major improvement in the core area after using all 20 classes! I just started a month of ClassPass, which allows me to go to 10 different classes at almost any fitness studio around Austin each month…pretty cool.

And even though I love these things, sometimes I just don’t want to spend money to workout. Ya get me? It’s hard enough to motivate ourselves to workout as it is, and then if you throw a $12 fee on top of that, sometimes it just doesn’t happen! I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite free workouts in Austin for those days when we just need to save some money!

Luke’s Locker Taco Run

The perfect run for someone visiting Austin, this 4- or 7-mile run takes you around the Capitol building, over and under the Congress bat bridge, next to Ladybird Lake, and finishes with a free taco, courtesy of Luke’s Locker, from one of the best taco joints Austin has to offer: Tacodeli!

Day: Every Tuesday

Time: 6:00 AM

Pace: At your own pace, but the group runs anywhere from about 7-10 minute miles.

Parking: Plenty of free parking in the parking garage next to Luke’s Locker, or free street parking if you get lucky!

Saturday Morning Bike Ride at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop

One of my favorite bike shops in Austin, Mellow Johnny’s hosts a weekly Saturday morning ride that leaves from the downtown store at 9:00 am. (Check their Facebook events page for updates – sometimes they leave at 8:30 AM in the hot summer months). There are several options based on your skill level, but the Scout-A-Rout ride is great if you’re new to cycling! It’s a 15-30 mile ride at 12-16 MPH, and there are lots of helpful and friendly people who will be on the ride with you. This ride helped me so much right when I was new to cycling and still learning how to clip-in and out! After the ride, enjoy a latte at Juan Pelota, the cafe that share’s a store with Mellow Johnny’s.

Day: Every Saturday

Time: 9:00 AM

Pace: Lots of options! Check the Mellow Johnny’s Weekly Rides page.

Parking: Free street parking until 11:00 AM, then it’s $1/hour. It’s a good idea to put in a little money in case you’re not back from the ride in time.

Walk, Run, or Bike the Austin Greenbelt

This is one of my all-time favorite free workouts in Austin! The greenbelt is a beautiful stretch of woods and river that runs right through the middle of the city, containing 12.68 miles of trails. There are several access points that you can see here, but my favorite one is the entrance right by Tacodeli on Spyglass. If you plug this Tacodeli into your google maps, you can park on the street and easily find the entry to the greenbelt. After a nice afternoon hike, grab some tacos and queso at Tacodeli!

Day/Time: Open 7 days a week, 5 AM – 10 PM

Parking: Varies by trailhead

Free Week of Yoga at Corepower Yoga

Corepower Yoga is a national yoga chain, so this free week can be used anywhere in the country! I used my free week in Austin, and I’m eager to get back for more! Corepower yoga uses heated rooms to help your body to warm up in order to be able to sweat it out! I found that the heated rooms really helped me to sink deeper into stretches to improve my flexibility.

Day/Time: three studios in Austin: see schedules here

Parking: Downtown parking is the trickiest of all three locations. There are about 10 covered spots in their parking lot, otherwise you need to find street parking. Plan on arriving a little early!

Do a Swim Workout at Barton Springs

Barton Springs is a beautiful natural spring-fed pool in the heart of Austin, Texas that keeps a year-round temperature of 68-70 degrees. There’s no admission fee in the winter months (November 1 – February 26), and if you want to swim for free in the summer months, no admission is charged before 8:00 am (the pool opens at 5:00 am). This Austin hotspot is packed in the summer afternoons, but go for a few early morning laps to beat the crowd and get a free workout! Need some workout ideas? Go to 100swimmingworkouts for workout sets for all skill levels.

One of the classes I’m most excited to explore with my Classpass is purebarre! I keep hearing wonderful things about it, and I’m excited to check it out. I hear that it’s a lot of small, repetitive movements that leave your muscles burning to create pretty significant results. Ha….sweet, burning muscles! 😉

Have you ever done it, and if so, any advice for me?

Happy Wednesday, y’all!

Kelsey

I hear ya about paying for fitness, especially when momentum dwindles. ClassPass just roped me back in with a 3-month deal but these are some good free options for later!
